We, the team ‘Mahabloggers’ from Rotaract district 3131, Pune, India, welcome you aboard on this virtual tour, ‘ महाराष्ट्राची चंदेरी दुनिया’ around our glorious and magnificient state of Maharastra with 36 spectacular and eminent districts, each rich with its distinct culture, heritage, and history, yet rooted to the illustrous spirit of valour of this state, which is the जन्मभूमी of innumerous brave and historically significant personalities. So, fasten your seat belts as we take you around the resplendent districts of Maharshtra. Our next destination for this tour is Thane.

Introduction of Thane:-

Thane is a city just outside Mumbai, in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. It’s known as the ‘City of Lakes’, and its more than 30 lakes include tree-lined Upvan Lake, a popular recreational spot. Besides Talao Pali Lake, Kopineshwar Mandir is an old, domed Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Marathi stands out to be the dominant language in Thane, the majority of its populace being Maharashtrian. Hindi is also widely spoken in the region along with English which is mostly used by the younger generation. Sindhi and Gujarati are two other notable languages while some families of the Khatri Ward still prefer to converse in Portuguese.


Culture and Tradition of Thane:-

A copper plate dating to AD 1078 was discovered near the foundations of Thane Fort in 1787. A land grant from Arikesara Devaraja, lord of Tagara, wherein he addresses the inhabitants of a city called “Sri Sthanaka”. The British occupied Salsette Island, Thana Fort, Fort Versova, and the island fort of Karanja in 1774. Thane’s lakes include Masunda Lake, also known as Talao Pali, Kachrali Lake, and Upvan Lake.Talao Pali is a popular evening spot for thaneites with three remarkable structures on its banks. Oldest is St.John the Baptist church, built by the Portuguese in 1582, is one of the heritage structures in Thane.
