We, the team ‘Mahabloggers’ from Rotaract district 3131, Pune, India, welcome you aboard on this virtual tour, ‘ महाराष्ट्राची चंदेरी दुनिया’ around our glorious and magnificient state of Maharastra with 36 spectacular and eminent districts, each rich with its distinct culture, heritage, and history, yet rooted to the illustrous spirit of valour of this state, which is the जन्मभूमी of innumerous brave and historically significant personalities. So, fasten your seat belts as we take you around the resplendent districts of Maharshtra. Our first destination for this tour is Chandrapur.

Introduction of Chandrapur:-

The district Chandrapur was earlier known as ‘Chanda’, according to tradition and legend the name of the place was ‘Lokapura’ which was first changed to ‘ Indpur’ and subsequently to Chandrapur. Chandrapur district is known for its super thermal power station, and its vast reserves of coal in Wardha coal valley field. Chandrapur also has large reservoirs of limestone which is a raw material for cement manufacturing in the district. Chandrapur is also known as the “black gold city”. Chandrapur district is known for its cleanliness. Now Chandrapur city is in the top 10 cleanest cities India and 2 in Maharashtra after Navi Mumbai by The minister of housing and urban affairs rank cities based on the cleanliness index. Marathi is spoken by most of the people in Chandrapur. The native Gondi language is spoken by most of the Gonds in Chandrapur.


Culture and tradition of Chandrapur:-

Chandrapur has a mixture of various cultures and tribes.The Chandrapur district is famous for tribal folk dances such as Dandar, Gondi and Rela.Adivasi folk dance on Diwali known as Dandar. Especially in the respect of lord Krishna.They do dance on auspicious occasions and when new crops come. This dance is popular in the tribe’s community. Rela dance which was performed by tribal women at forest area of Bhadrachalam agency area.

The urban Chandrapur can witness Lavni, Gondhals, and Bharuds which are considered the other most popular folk dances of this region. Lavni is supposed to be the identity of Maharashtra which is a combination of traditional dance and song, and is performed on the enchanting rhythm of drum like instrument called Dholak.

Ganesh Utsav, Dussehra, Diwali and Makar Sankranti are widely celebrated festivals in Chandrapur. Holi, Dussehra and Diwali are the main festivals of tribals. The tribal community families reside in the dense forest of District.


Tourism in Chandrapur:-

  • Mahakali Temple- Mahakali Temple is one of the famous temples in Chandrapur, and can be called the representation of the city.The main goddess in this temple is Mahakali Mata.It is usually jam-packed by pilgrims during the month of April, especially on the eve of Hanuman Jayanti. There are two main entrances to the temple, a back entrance featuring a Ganesh temple and a Shani temple, which is a common place of worship on Saturdays, and the front entrance featuring Lord Hanuman.
  • Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station — Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station (CSTPS) is the largest thermal power station of Maharashtra State Electricity Board.It is situated at a distance of about 6 km from the city.The capacity of this power station is over 2340 MW.The effective water storage capacity of this dam is around 198 million cubic metres.
  • Gond Raja Fort- This Fort was built by the Gond kings between the late 15th century and early 16th century. The main purpose for constructing this fort was to protect the king and the army from enemy attacks. The construction of this fort was started by Babji Ballal Sah, after his death in 1597, the work was carried further by Dhundiya Ram Sah. The fort measures around 15 to 20 ft by height, and covers a massive area of around 7.5 miles.
  • Anandvan Ashram- This ashram is located in the town of Warora, which is just a few kilometres from Chandrapur city.It is basically an ashram, this center mostly serves as a community rehabilitation center for patients suffering from leprosy.
  • Ancient Caves- The Ancient Caves are located very close to the city of Chandrapur.These caves were constructed during the 8th century; these caves house about nine smaller caves that were engraved for Buddhist monks. These were basically used by the monks for meditation and thus feature a large number of carved Buddhist sculptures.
  • Chandrapur Fort- Chandrapur Fort (formerly Chanda Fort) is the oldest area in Chandrapur. It was built by Gond King Khandkya Ballal Sah in the 13th century.It has eight entrances, in clockwise order, Jatpura Gate, Bagad Khidki, Anchaleshwar Gate, Hanuman Khidki, Pathanpura Gate, Vithoba Khidki, Binba Gate and Chor khidki.This fort is situated at the confluence of Irai and Zarpat rivers.

Food of chandrapura:-

Various food items are found here. Some of the famous food items are Vada pav, Sabudana vada and khichadi, Vangaycha bharit(Made of eggplants, ginger, onions and green chilies, the dish goes best with chapati or burnt garlic rice), Khichdi(A regular and staple dish of Chandrapur. It is prepared with rice, urad dal, onions and tomatoes. A light preparation for all. It is served with ghee or butter), Chakli (A regular and staple dish of Chandrapur.
