We, the team ‘Mahabloggers’ from Rotaract district 3131, Pune, India, welcome you aboard on this virtual tour, ‘ महाराष्ट्राची चंदेरी दुनिया’ around our glorious and magnificient state of Maharastra with 36 spectacular and eminent districts, each rich with its distinct culture, heritage, and history, yet rooted to the illustrous spirit of valour of this state, which is the जन्मभूमी of innumerous brave and historically significant personalities. So, fasten your seat belts as we take you around the resplendent districts of Maharshtra. Our first destination for this tour is Gadchiroli.

Introduction of Gadchiroli:-

Gadchiroli district is situated on the North-Eastern side of Maharashtra State & has State borders of Telangana and Chhattisgarh. The district is categorised as a Tribal and undeveloped district and most of the land is covered with forest and hills. Naxalism is highly prevalent in Gadchiroli district and subsequently has been highlighted as part of the Red Corridor. They took the shelter in the dense forest & hills of this district.

Other than that Gadchiroli is an administrative district. The Gadchiroli district serves as the main headquarters.


Culture and Tradition of Gadchiroli:-

The tribals in the district have their own culture. They worship their God named “Persa Pen” and others.They dance “Rela” on auspicious occasions and when new crops come. The villagers are interested in arranging “Natak, Tamasha” on the occasion of “Shankar-Pat” in the month of January and February and also arrange the cultural programmes as “Dandar” on Festival days like Dashehara, Diwali, Holi etc.

Holi, Dashehara and Diwali are the main festivals of tribals. The tribal community families reside in the dense forest of District. The other community people have their own Festival such as Ganpati, Dussehra, Diwali and Holi.

Seven languages are spoken in the district i.e., Gondi, Madiya , Marathi, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Chattisgadi.



Tousrism in Gadchiroli:-

  • Chaprala Wildlife Sanctuary- Spread over an area of approx. 140 km, it has thick forest growth with occasional stretches of grasslands. Sanctuary is located on the bank of Confluence of Wardha and Wainganga rivers.The sanctuary is a home to various kinds of plants and animals.The best time to visit the park is during and between the months of February and May.
  • Wadham Fossils Park- The Wadadam Fossil Park is situated near a village Wadadam in Sironcha taluka. It is located 189 k.m. towards South from District head quarters Gadchiroli and 19 k.m. from Sironcha.A group of amateur archaeologists have unearthed fossils in the Maoist-hit Sironcha in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra’s Vidarbha, Sironcha is among the five places in the country where dinosaur fossils have been found in large numbers.A full-fledged skeleton of a dinosaur was found in 1959 near the Godavari basin in Kothapalli-Pochampally village that borders Telangana. The fossil has since then been kept in a Kolkata museum.
  • Glory of Allapalli- The Glory of Allapalli is situated in compartment no 76 in Allapalli Forest Range. It is about 16 k.m. from Allapalli on the way to Bhamragad.It is a permanent preservation plot, which is maintained for the study of Allapalli forest under their natural condition.The plot has an area of 6 hector and it is established in the year 1953. The Various species of trees such as teak, tendu, dhawala, kusum, yen ect. are available in the Van Vaibhav area. Also, medicinal plants such as gunj, tarota, gulvel are being found here.

  • Markanda Deo Temple- Markandadeo village is a popular place of God ‘Shiva’ and is grandeur for religious people not only in Maharashtra but also everywhere in India. It comes under Chamorshi Tehsil in Gadchiroli sub division. The village is situated on the bank of Wainganga River.

  • Vairagad Fort- Vairagad Fort is famous for its ancient Temple & fort. The name Vairagad to be a corruption Of ‘ Vajra Kar ‘ meaning ‘ Diamond mine.The village Vairagad is surrounded by security wall of fort.It has been identified by some as being the same as Viratnagari of the Mahabharata where the Pandavas passed in hiding the period of their exile in disguise.

Food of Gadchiroli:-

In Gadchiroli, a tribal-dominated Vidarbha district, people eat an assortment of bitters, a different variety each month.

  • Towards May and early June, when kuda (Holarrhena antidysenterica) is in full bloom, it is time for the Gond tribals to prepare for the delicious kuda chya besan.


  • During the monsoon season,tribal groups consume a small creeper (Glossogyne pinnatifida), which they call kadu bhaji.
  • Two cuisines namely the Varhadi cuisine and the spicy and fiery non-vegetarian Saoji cuisine, are two authentic cuisines of the district.
  • Vidarbha cuisine has influence of spices, dry coconut and besan (chickpea flour) thus making it a spicy cuisine.
  • Patodi Rassa Bhaji, Kalnyachi bhakri, Vada Bhaat, Gola Bhaat and Varhadi Thecha constitute the staple diet of the Vidarbha region.
