So, fasten your seat belts as we take you around the resplendent districts of Maharashtra. Our next destination for this tour is Sindhudurg.

Introduction of Sindhudurg:-

Named after the fort of Sindhudurg (meaning “fort in the sea”) that lies on a rocky island just off the coast of Malvan, Sindhudurg district is the southern part of the greater tract known as the ‘Konkan’ which is historically famous for its long coastline and safe harbors. Sindhudurg district was earlier a part of the Ratnagiri district. For administrative convenience and industrial and agricultural development Ratnagiri district was divided into Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg with effect from 1 May 1981.

Sindhudurg is bordered on the north by Ratnagiri District, on the south by the state of Goa, on the west by the Arabian Sea, and to the east across the crest of the Western Ghats or Sahyadris is Kolhapur District. Sindhudurg is part of the Konkan (coastal) region, a narrow coastal plain in western Maharashtra which lies between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea.


Culture and Traditions of Sindhudurg:-

This city has a rich history and culture and perhaps one of the most grasping things about it is its food.


Tourism in Sindhudurg:-

  1. Amboli Hill Station: With an altitude of 690 meters, this is the last hill station before the coastal highlands of Goa. Amboli, Tal. Sawantwadi, Dist. Sindhudurg is connected by direct ST buses from Sawantwadi and Sawantwadi are well connected by direct ST buses from Mumbai, Goa, Pune, Kolhapur, and Belgaum. It is a favorite tourist destination during the monsoon season. Lots of biodiversities are found in the amboli forest. Also, waterfalls are the main attraction in amboli. Hiranyakeshi is one of the tourist spots near amboli.


2. Sindhudurg Fort: Sindhudurg fort is located in the middle of the sea and was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji, the 17th-century ruler of the Maratha Empire Its main objective was to counter the rising influence of foreign colonizers (English, Dutch, French and Portuguese merchants) and to curb the rise of Siddis of Janjira. Construction was supervised by Hiroji Indulkar in 1664. The fort was built on a small island known as the Khurte island.

3. Tarkarli Beach: Tarkarli beach was declared as a Queen Beach of the Konkan region. Monthly, Thousands of tourists are visiting this place to rejuvenate and enjoy the thrill of water sports activities. All Water Sports activities in Tarkarli are going on as per international safety standards and under the guidance of a professional instructor(Dive Master) with modern safety equipment. Many scuba diving operators run these activities near Tsunami island, Devbagh because of shallow water and low life risk.



Food of Sindhudurg:-

The cuisine of the district is popularly known as Malvani cuisine. Malvani cuisine is one of the unique cuisines than the rest of Maharashtra with very low oil and spices but very tasty with the use of locally available spices. Even the TAJ group has also included Malvani cuisine in their menu. Some of the popular dishes include Kombadi Vade (Thick Puri made of rice flour), Ghavane Ras (Rice dosa with sweet coconut milk), and Shirvale (Noodles served with sweet coconut milk).
